NaNoWriMo Day 12: Picking Up Steam

13 Nov

Words at start of day: 10,015/50,000 words

Words at end of day: 12,296/50,000 words

Yeah, that’s right.  I wrote 2,281 words in one day.  I think that’s my most to date.  I found this nifty thing: Write Or Die

It’s simple.  you set a goal and a timer and you write… the screen flashes red if you pause for too long.  For being such a simple program, it’s really added a boost to my writing.  See, I’d had this plan.  Every hour (or couple of hours ro so) at work, I’d take out 5-10 minutes to write as my break.  Sounded like a great idea – I figured I could write 400-500 words in this time (or any number of words, really) and it would help with my total words.  There’s a flaw in this plan though.  When I tried to write, I’d get distracted (ooh, let’s check this blog) or get stuck (ah crap, what’s next) and therefore get distracted (hey, what’s changed in this forum) or just not want to write.

The Write or Die page is no different than just setting up a clock, right?

Wrong.  It feels different.  The page blinks at me.  There’s a timer.  There’s a word counter.  Therefore, I feel like I have to write.  So I do.  It’s great.  I ran it 3 times at work and once I night… i was just under 500 words the first 2 times and and just over 500 the last 2.  The best part is that even when I’m stuck, the flashing screen forces me to think faster… gives me some adrenaline, if you will.  So I come up with something to write.  And once I’ve started, the ideas generally keep flowing better and I tend to get myself a little bit “unstuck”.

It’s awesome.  See, I’m going to catch up :S

NaNoWriMo Day 8: Flying Off The Tracks

8 Nov

Total: 6,765/50,000 words

I had a goal of making 10,000 words this weekend.  As you can see, I’m not even close.  In fact, at 11:30pm last night, I was only at 6,000 words.  The extra 750 words came this morning before work.  I’m finding it really hard to write some parts of this novel.  The one thing I discovered this morning, however, was that when I’m dedicated to writing and I’m writing a part where I have inspiration, it flows.

I wrote 750 words in 15 minutes or so this morning.

I think I need to learn to move on when I’m stuck and just keep writing.  *sigh*  We’ll see if I manage to pick up anymore steam this week.  I’m doing pretty good for the day though.

NaNoWriMo Day 2 … And Falling Behind Already!

3 Nov

Day 2 Roundup: 838/1,667 words

Total: 2,004/50,000 words

I continued on my trend of “writing random things” by writing half of chapter two and half a page of some future chapter.  I didn’t get much writing done today… I wrote a bit of chapter 2 at work and late at home last night (after piano, running and yoga, which made me extremely tired) and that odd random chapter while waiting for piano to start.  I’m awesome.

That’s all.

NaNoWriMo Day 1: Late Night Writing

2 Nov

Words completed: 1,166 of 50,000

Day 1 goal: 1,667 words 😦

Goal to date: 1,667 words

50,000 words doesn’t seem so daunting.  Until you do the math and realize it’s 1,667 words per day.  And I didn’t write yesterday until about 9pm at night.  So I haven’t quite met the daily goal.  Whoops.

I’ve decided not to post anything until NaNoWriMo is over and my novel is done.  You’ll see why later.

Back to the novel.  I have to confess, I had about 200 words of my novel written prior to November 1st – a bit of the start and a bit of the middle.  I counted them in the total anyways, and I don’t consider it cheating since both parts will be worked on this month.  need to be rewritten.  I also don’t write in a linear way.  Yesterday, I wrote much of chapter one, and the last half of the last chapter.  I had an idea for exactly how I wanted the novel to end so I wrote it.  I’m sure today I’ll write part of the middle or something and it will all join up eventually.  I’m just kind of like that.  That’s part of why I’m not posting anything.  It wouldn’t make sense for me to post what I’ve written since they’re sort of messed up bits and pieces.

The other part is that I still don’t have names for everything.  Right now, I have a Country Y in my novel.  I hate naming things, it drives me crazy.  I know names are important and many of them make the novel.  But I hate doing it and one day, I’m going to write a novel with all the people and countries as numbers.  Hah.  So there.

Anyway, I should get started writing or something.  I’m pretty sure I’ve written more words in blog posts and draft posts over at Go Fork Go! for veganmofo than I have of my novel so far.  It’s so much easier to write about what I’ve cooked since it’s a “been there and done that” kind of thing rather than a “make up random shit” kind of thing.
